Red Sox claim right-handed pitcher Andrew Triggs off waivers from San Francisco Giants

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today claimed right-handed pitcher Andrew Triggs off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and optioned him to the Alternate Training Site at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated left-handed pitcher Stephen Gonsalves for assignment.

Triggs, 31, made his lone appearance of 2020 on August 2 against the Texas Rangers. In his major league career, the right-hander has appeared in 46 games (27 starts) with the Oakland A’s (2016-18) and Giants (2020), going 9-9 with a 4.68 ERA (85 ER/163.1 IP). A Nashville native, Triggs was selected by Kansas City in the 19th round of the 2012 June Draft after earning a degree in political science at the University of Southern California. He has pitched in the Royals, Orioles, A’s, and Giants organizations.

Gonsalves, 26, was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on July 25 and was optioned to the Alternate Training Site. He has appeared in seven major league games (four starts), all in 2018 with the Minnesota Twins. A California native, he was selected by the Twins in the fourth round of the 2013 June Draft out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. In his minor league career, the left-hander is 53-22 with a 2.50 ERA (170 ER/612.0 IP) and a .199 opponent batting average in 121 appearances (114 starts).
