Red Sox place left-handed pitcher Chris Sale on 10-day injured list

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed left-handed pitcher Chris Sale on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 14. To fill Sale’s spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Sale, 30, is 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA (72 ER/147.1 IP) in 25 starts this season. In his last two outings, the left-hander has allowed five runs in 14.2 innings (1.84 ERA) with 25 strikeouts and two walks. Acquired by the Red Sox in December 2016, Sale is 36-25 with a 3.21 ERA (194 ER/544.2 IP) and 0.99 WHIP in 91 appearances (88 starts) for the club, including the Postseason.

Brasier, 31, has posted a 4.24 ERA (19 ER/40.1 IP) with seven saves in 44 relief appearances for the Red Sox this season. The right-hander has also made 10 appearances with Pawtucket and owns a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) with a .182 opponent batting average and 0.75 WHIP. In his last three minor league outings, he has allowed zero runs and zero hits with seven strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
