Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

• Placed left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, retroactive to July 30.

• Optioned catcher Connor Wong to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

• Added right-hander pitcher Hansel Robles (No. 56) and left-handed pitcher Austin Davis (No. 65) to the active 26-man roster.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Hernandez, 24, pitched a scoreless eighth inning Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Over 41 appearances this season (all in relief), the left-hander is 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA. Of those 41 outings this year, 33 have been scoreless and 23 have been hitless. Across three major league seasons, all with Boston (2019-21), Hernandez has struck out 45.2 percent of left-handed hitters faced, holding them to a .158 batting average.

Wong, 25, made his major league debut this season and appeared in five games over two stints with Boston, going 3-for-12 (.250) and throwing out the only runner who attempted to steal against him. In 26 games with Worcester this season, he has hit .188 (19-for-101) with two home runs, making 24 starts at catcher, one at second base, and one at designated hitter. Wong is ranked by MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 16 prospect.

Robles, 30, has made 45 appearances with the Twins this season, recording 10 saves with a 4.91 ERA (24 ER/44.0 IP) and 43 strikeouts. The right-hander has pitched in 358 major league games (one start) with the New York Mets (2015-18), Los Angeles Angels (2018-20), and Twins (2021), going 27-22 with 37 saves, a 4.03 ERA (169 ER/377.2 IP), and a .230 opponent batting average. In 2019, Robles recorded career bests in appearances (71), ERA (2.48), and saves (23).

Davis, 28, has made 65 major league relief appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018-20) and Pirates (2020-21), posting a 5.65 ERA (45 ER/71.2 IP) with 78 strikeouts. This season, the left-hander has pitched in 10 games with Pittsburgh and in 13 at the minor league level, recording a 2.65 ERA (5 ER/17.0 IP), a 0.82 WHIP, and a .148 opponent batting average between Low-A Bradenton (two games) and Triple-A Indianapolis (11 games). Born in Scottsdale, AZ, Davis was selected by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 2014 June Draft.
