White Sox Invite 25 Players to Spring Training
CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with the following 11 free agents:
- RHP (5): Justin Anderson, Joe Barlow, Jake Cousins, Chad Kuhl and Jake Woodford;
- C (1): Chuckie Robinson;
- INF (1): Danny Mendick;
- OF (4): Rafael Ortega, Mark Payton, Brett Phillips and Kevin Pillar.
All 11 players have received non-roster invites to the club’s spring training camp in Glendale, Ariz. Anderson (2018-19 with Los Angeles-AL), Barlow (2021-23 with Texas), Cousins (2021-23 with Milwaukee), Kuhl (2016-21 with Pittsburgh; 2022 with Colorado; 2023 with Washington), Woodford (2020-23 with St. Louis), Robinson (2022 with Cincinnati), Mendick (2019-22 with the White Sox; 2023 with the Mets), Ortega (2012 with Colorado; 2016 with the Angels; 2018 with Miami; 2019 with Atlanta; 2021-22 with the Cubs; 2023 with New York-NL), Payton (2020-21 with Cincinnati; 2022 with the White Sox), Phillips (2017-18 with Milwaukee; 2018-20 with Kansas City; 2020-22 with Tampa Bay; 2022 with Baltimore; 2023 with Los Angeles-AL) and Pillar (2013-19 with Toronto; 2019 with San Francisco; 2020 with Boston; 2020 with Colorado; 2021 with the Mets; 2022 with the Dodgers; 2023 with Atlanta) all have major-league experience.
In addition, the following 14 players from within the White Sox organization have been invited to 2024 spring training:
- RHP (6): Jonathan Cannon, Jordan Leasure, Nick Nastrini, Edgar Navarro, Nick Padilla and Lane Ramsey;
- LHP (2): Ky Bush and Fraser Ellard;
- C (3): Adam Hackenberg, Carlos Pérez and Edgar Quero;
- INF (3): Tim Elko, Colson Montgomery and Zach Remillard.
Montgomery ranks No. 9 among MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects and is baseball’s No. 2 shortstop prospect. Quero is rated No. 9 among catchers. Montgomery (No. 1), Nastrini (No. 3), Quero (No. 5), Cannon (No. 9), Bush (No. 11) and Leasure (No. 14) rank among the White Sox top prospects according to Baseball America. Montgomery (No. 15) also ranks among the publication’s Top 100 prospects in baseball, and is rated the Best Athlete in the Sox system.
Pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Wednesday, February 14, including physicals and a workout. Position players will report and undergo physicals on Monday, February 19. The first full-squad workout also takes place on the 19th.
