Rangers Recall LHP Joe Palumbo From Nashville, Option RHP Pedro Payano To Nashville

Minneapolis, Minn. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Joe Palumbo (#62) from Triple-A Nashville and optioned right-handed pitcher Pedro Payano to Nashville. Palumbo is expected to make his third major league appearance in today’s 1:10 CT series finale against the Twins.

Palumbo has gone 0-1 with a 16.50 ERA (11 ER/6.0 IP) in two starts for the Rangers this season. He made his major league debut in game one of a doubleheader on June 8 vs. Oakland (ND, 4.0 IP, 4 R-ER) and took the loss on June 19 vs. Cleveland (2.0 IP, 7 R-ER). Palumbo has split the balance of this season between Nashville and Double-A Frisco, going 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA (23 ER/63.0 IP) and 29 walks/83 strikeouts in 13 games/12 starts. The left-hander last pitched and earned the win on Monday vs. Oklahoma City (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R-0 ER, 3 BB, 10 SO, 97 pitches/57 strikes).

In his seven minor league seasons, Palumbo has gone 19-17 with a 2.76 ERA in 100 games/49 starts. The Holbrook, NY native owns an overall 1.173 WHIP figure in the minors, registering 10.6 strikeouts per 9 innings while allowing just 0.5 home runs per 9.

Payano worked a scoreless 6th inning in his major league debut on Saturday against the Twins after his contract was selected from Nashville prior to the game. He has combined to go 5-3 with a 3.91 ERA (30 ER/69.0 IP) over 15 games/14 starts for Nashville and Double-A Frisco in 2019.

Following these transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with five players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, LHP Taylor Hearn, LHP Yohander Méndez, LHP Jeffrey Springs, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
