RED SOX ACQUIRE RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER DUSTIN MAY FROM LOS ANGELES DODGERS
BOSTON, MA— The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers, in exchange for minor league outfielders James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard.
To make room for May on the 40-man roster, Boston transferred right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck to the 60-day Injured List.
May, 27, has pitched in 19 games (18 starts) for the Dodgers this season, posting a 4.85 ERA (56 ER/104.0 IP) with 97 strikeouts. The right-hander has thrown at least 5.0 innings in 16 of his 18 starts this season, including a career-high eight quality starts. Selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has gone 18-16 with a 3.71 ERA (122 ER/295.2 IP) in 65 career Major League games (52 starts), all with Los Angeles (2019-23, 2025). He missed the 2024 season recovering from surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm in July 2023 and an esophageal tear in July 2024. In nine career Postseason games, May is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (6 ER/14.0 IP) and 14 strikeouts.
Tibbs III, 22, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 10 prospects by MLB.com (No. 5) and Baseball America (No. 10). The left-handed hitter has batted .207 (24-for-116) in 30 games with Double-A Portland since he was acquired from the San Francisco Giants on June 15, making 17 starts in right field, five in left field, five at first base, and three as the designated hitter. A Georgia native, he was originally selected by the Giants in the first round (No. 13 overall) of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.
Ehrhard, 22, is ranked by MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 27 prospect. The right-handed hitter has played in 89 games this season between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland, combining to bat .267 (86-for-322) with nine home runs and 45 RBI while making 38 starts in right field, 31 in left field, 10 as the designated hitter, and nine in center field. The Florida native was selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.
Houck, 29, was placed on the Injured List on May 13 with a right flexor pronator strain. The right-hander made five rehab outings (4 starts) between Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland before being returned from his rehab assignment. In nine starts with Boston this season, he is 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA (39 ER/43.2 IP). Originally selected by Boston in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, the Missouri native owns a 3.97 ERA (209 ER/474.1 IP) in 113 career Major League games (80 starts), all with the Red Sox (2020-25).
