Red Sox place left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on family medical leave list

Prior to today's game against the Kansas City Royals, the Boston Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on the family medical leave list. To fill Rodriguez's spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden from Triple-A Pawtucket.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Rodriguez, 25, is 3-0 with a 4.78 ERA (14 ER/26.1 IP) this season, with the Red Sox winning each of his five starts. He most recently pitched Monday against the Kansas City Royals but did not factor into the decision, allowing five runs with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Acquired by the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Andrew Miller on July 31, 2014, Rodriguez joins Rick Porcello as the only pitchers to make at least 20 starts for Boston in each of the last three seasons. Named the Red Sox' 2015 Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, the left-hander is 22-20 with a 4.27 ERA (186 ER/392.1 IP) in 71 major league appearances (70 starts), all with Boston.
Walden, 29, made his first career major league Opening Day roster this season after attending spring training with the Red Sox as a non-roster invitee. The right-hander has appeared in seven big league games over two stints with Boston in 2018, posting a 4.91 ERA (6 ER/11.0 IP) with 10 strikeouts, three walks, and zero home runs allowed. The 2017 recipient of Pawtucket's Most Valuable Pitcher Award has also made one appearance for the PawSox, allowing two runs in 2.0 innings pitched on April 27 at Buffalo. Selected by Toronto in the ninth round of the 2007 June Draft, Walden is 46-45 with a 3.86 ERA (338 ER/789.0 IP) in 219 career minor league appearances (117 starts) for the Blue Jays, Athletics, Reds, Twins, and Red Sox organizations.
