Red Sox Place RHP Garrett Whitlock on 15-Day IL
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock on the 15-Day Injured List (retroactive to May 25) with left knee inflammation. To fill his spot, Boston recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester.
Whitlock, 29, is 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA (7 ER/19.2 IP) and 25 strikeouts in 20 appearances this season. The right-hander is 5-1 with 16 holds, a 1.85 ERA (7 ER/34.0 IP) and 47 strikeouts in his last 33 games dating back to August 21, 2025. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, the Georgia native owns a 3.13 ERA (116 ER/333.1 IP) with 368 strikeouts in 185 career Major League games (23 starts), all with the Red Sox (2021-26).
Samaniego, 27, has posted a 1.04 ERA (2 ER/17.1 IP) with a .213 opponent average (13-for-61) and 13 strikeouts in 18 games for Boston this season, his Major League debut. The left-hander has also made four relief appearances with Triple-A Worcester, allowing four earned runs over 6.1 innings. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Alabama native was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade in December 2025 and owns a 3.89 ERA (71 ER/164.1 IP) in 131 career minor league games (two starts).
