Red Sox Select Right-Handed Pitcher Trevor Kelley From Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox selected right-handed pitcher Trevor Kelley to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for Kelley on the 40-man roster, the club designated catcher Óscar Hernández for assignment. Kelley will wear number 71.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Kelley, 25, is making his first-ever appearance on a major league roster. In his 28 appearances for the PawSox in 2019, the Rhode Island native has posted a 5-2 record with four saves, a 0.96 ERA (4 ER/37.2 IP), and 34 strikeouts, earning him an International League All-Star selection. In his last 19 appearances since May 16, he has allowed only one earned run over 21.1 innings (0.42 ERA). Kelley was a 36th-round selection by Boston in the 2015 June Draft out of the University of North Carolina. He made eight scoreless appearances (3.2 IP) for the Red Sox in major league spring training this year.

Hernández, 25, was added to the Red Sox’ 40-man roster on May 17 but has not appeared in a major league game this season. He has played in 30 games between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this season, making 29 starts at catcher and appearing in one game at first base. Hernández has thrown out 171 of 428 attempted base stealers (40.0%) during his minor league career, including nine out of 33 (27.3%) this season. He has attended spring training as a non-roster invitee with Boston in each of the last two years, having signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January 2018.
