ARLINGTON -- Jacob deGrom will not make his final start of the first half on Sunday against the Astros due to a “mild left glute strain,” manager Skip Schumaker said prior to Friday’s game against the Astros at Globe Life Field.
deGrom was limited to just five innings in his last start against the Angels on Tuesday due to what he described as a “hip/leg thing.” At the time, he felt confident he could make his final start before the break.
“I think I'll be fine,” deGrom said on Tuesday. “I think we'll manage in between. Honestly, I think sometimes off-days make you feel a little funny. I think we'll stay on top of it this week, and I think I'll be good to go.”
But the sensation has lingered in between his starts and he will not pitch until after the All-Star break. The Rangers did not immediately place him on the injured list, though it is still a possibility. deGrom has not been on the injured list since undergoing Tommy John surgery midway through the 2023 season.
deGrom has a 3.49 ERA in 100 2/3 innings this season.
“You never want any of your players to feel anything, especially Jacob deGrom,” Schumaker said. “I think, obviously, if there's anything with the hip or lower half or arm, you're definitely concerned. Having a conversation with him, the way he's feeling today is better. You never know until a couple more days of rehab and how he feels. So I think the All-Star break is at the right time for him to recover, and hopefully it's shorter right after the All-Star break than longer.”
