Taillon intends to pitch for Canada in upcoming Classic
The Cubs' starting pitcher announced his intention to play for Canada in the upcoming Classic on social media on Wednesday.
Honored (Honoured?) to play for @baseballcanada in the World Baseball Classic! Excited to put on the uniform and represent my family and our Canadian roots!
Taillon was born in Florida and grew up in Texas, but he is a Canadian-American dual citizen and both of his parents are Canadian.
This will be the 34-year-old right-hander's second time pitching for Canada in the World Baseball Classic -- but his first time in more than a decade.
Taillon first played for Canada in the 2013 Classic, when he was a 21-year-old top prospect for the Pirates who was still three years away from making his Major League debut.
Taillon made one start in that World Baseball Classic, and it was against the United States in an elimination game in pool play. Taillon held Team USA to two runs (one earned) in four innings, and he struck out Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Braun and Shane Victorino. But the U.S. pulled away late to win the game, 9-4.
