BILOXI, MS– The Biloxi Shuckers (55-55, 20-24) were swept by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (65-49, 29-16) after a 5-3 defeat on Sunday night at Keesler Federal Park. Despite the 11th straight loss for Biloxi, Jaron DeBerry (5.0ip, 0er, 9k) dazzled not allowing an earned run and striking out nine, while not allowing a walk through five frames. DeBerry sits atop the Southern League leaderboard for strikeouts this season with 119.
The Blue Wahoos blew the ballgame open in the third with four runs, thanks to an Aiva Arquette RBI single and a three-run bomb from Brandon Compton. The Shuckers got on the board in the fourth with an Andrew Fischer homer, off the bat at 100, going 352 feet to make it 4-1. That marked Fischer's 37th round tripper of the season between High-A and Double-A, tying him with Joey Meyer (1985) for the 2nd-most home runs by a Brewers Minor Leaguer in franchise history since 1970. A Jesús Made sacrifice fly cut the deficit in half in the sixth. In the seventh, each squad plated a run with an Adrian Santana base knock for Pensacola, and a Mike Boeve home run for Biloxi, which went 388 feet, off the bat at 100 mph, which made it 5-3. The Blue Wahoos brought home a sixth run in the ninth after an RBI walk by Brandon Compton.
Mike Boeve (3-for-4) led the way for the Shuckers with his ninth three-hit game of the season. Dylan O’Rae stole his 50th base of the campaign as well, becoming the 2nd Shucker in franchise history to reach the half-century mark.
Joey Volini was victorious for his first time in Double-A, with Jaron DeBerry (7-7) on the downside, and Holt Jones getting his fifth save. Edwin Jimenez (0.2ip, 0r) had the lone scoreless outing in the Shuckers bullpen.
The Shuckers are idle on Monday and hit the road to Huntsville to face the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Los Angeles Angels) for the final time this season. The series opener at Toyota Field takes place on Tuesday, August 18 at 6:35 p.m. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. with the On-Deck Show on the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network and The Hype 100.9.
