BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (60-63, 25-33) earned an 8-7 comeback win over the Birmingham Barons (55-72, 29-29) at Keesler Federal Park on Tuesday night in a series opener. With the win, the Shuckers clinched a winning record at home for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the past five years. The game also saw Andrew Fischer hit his 43rd home run of the season between High-A (20) and Double-A (23), tied for the 11th-most in a single season in the Modern Era of Minor League Baseball (since 1963).
The Barons jumped on the Shuckers early, with three runs in the first off back-to-back home runs from Anthony DePino and Colby Shelton. The Shuckers responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to right from Andrew Fischer and took the lead with a two-RBI double from Mike Boeve in the third. The Barons responded and tied it at four in the fourth with a solo home run from Colby Shelton, but an RBI single from Andrew Fischer and a sacrifice fly from Damon Keith in the bottom half made it 6-4. In the sixth, the Barons took a 7-6 lead with a bases-loaded walk from Samuel Zavala and a two-RBI single from Dylan Campbell. Mike Boeve, in the bottom of the inning, tied the game at seven with his third hit of the night, an RBI single into left. The Shuckers then took the lead for good in the eighth on an RBI single to right from Matthew Wood. Garrett Hodges (2-0) earned the win while Luis Paddack (4-1) took the loss.
On the mound, Shuckers starter Josh Knoth, making his Double-A debut, struck out four over 5.0 innings, extending his streak of going at least five innings to six consecutive appearances. After allowing three runs in the first, Knoth retired 13 of his final 16 batters faced and allowed hard contact on just two of 11 balls in play. At the plate, Andrew Fischer (3-for-4), Matthew Wood (2-for-3) and Mike Boeve (3-for-5) each recorded multi-hit performances. Boeve’s marked his 31st of the season, tied for the third-most among Southern League hitters.
The series continues on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Manuel Rodriguez (12-4, 4.76) is slated to start for the Shuckers against Connor McCullough (1-7, 4.23) for the Barons.
