BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (62-65, 27-35) earned a doubleheader split against the Birmingham Barons (57-74, 31-31) at Keesler Federal Park on Saturday night. The Shuckers won game two, 8-5, and fell, 2-1, in game one. Andrew Fischer starred in the doubleheader with a pair of home runs and five walks, bringing his season total to 46. Fischer pulled into a tie for the fifth-most home runs in a season by a player in Minor League Baseball in the Modern Era and tied Ryan Howard (2004) for the most this century.
In game one, Caleb Bonemar gave the Barons a 1-0 lead in the first with a home run to center. The Shuckers tied the game in the third with back-to-back doubles from Braylon Payne and Jesús Made. The game remained tied until the seventh, when an RBI single from Jordan Sprinkle made it 2-1. Johnathan Clark (8-3) earned the win for the Barons while Garrett Hodges (2-1) took the loss for the Shuckers. Pierce George picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning. On the mound, Shuckers starter J.D. Thompson set a new career high with 6.0 innings and retired 15 of his final 17 batters faced.
In game two, the Shuckers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after an inning with runs coming home on a three-run home run from Andrew Fischer, a two-run home run from Matthew Wood, an RBI single from Braylon Payne and a sacrifice fly from Jesús Made. The Barons responded with four runs, including a pair in the second on a two-RBI double from Jose Colmenares and two more in the fourth on a two-run home run from Colmenares. The Shuckers responded and made it 8-4 in the fourth with a solo home run to right from Andrew Fischer. Colby Shelton brought home the final run of the game with a solo home run to right. Jaron DeBerry (8-8) earned the win while Juan Carela (2-3) took the loss. Edwin Jimenez picked up his third save of the season for the Shuckers with a pair of scoreless innings.
At the plate, Braylon Payne (2-for-4 in G2), Andrew Fischer (2-for-2 in G2) and Dylan O’Rae (2-for-3 in G2) each recorded multi-hit performances. Dylan O’Rae also recorded a pair of stolen bases to bring his Southern league-leading total to 58, matching Mike Felder for the most by a Milwaukee Brewers Double-A player in a season since 1984. With a pair of RBI during the doubleheader, Jesús Made stands four away from breaking Jackson Chourio's single-season RBI record of 89, set in 2023.
The series and the homestand conclude on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Josh Knoth (0-0, 7.20) is slated to start for the Shuckers against Dylan Cumming (4-8, 5.89) for the Barons. The Shuckers conclude their regular season home slate with Family Sunday presented by Chicken Salad Chick.
