BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (55-52, 20-22) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (62-49, 26-16), 11-10, in 10 innings at Kessler Federal Park on Thursday night. The teams combined for 21 runs, 26 hits and five home runs, including 12 runs and 12 hits across the final two innings. Despite the loss, Andrew Fischer recorded his Minor League Baseball-leading 36th home run of the season and Damon Keith recorded a home run for the second straight game, a 470-foot blast to left-center, the second-longest by a Shucker this season.
The Shuckers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Damon Keith to right. The Blue Wahoos took the lead, 2-1, in the second with an RBI double from Dylan Jasso and an RBI groundout from Colby Shade. Damon Keith tied the game at two with an RBI single to third and David Garcia gave the Shuckers the lead in the fourth with an RBI single to short right. In the fifth, Cristian Hernandez tied the game at three with an RBI double to left, and Juan Matheus gave the Blue Wahoos a 5-3 lead in the seventh with a two-RBI double. The Shuckers came within one in the seventh with a bases-loaded walk to Damon Keith. The Blue Wahoos extended the lead in the ninth with a solo home run from Dylan Jasso and an RBI single from Cristian Hernandez. In the ninth, the Shuckers tied the game at seven with back-to-back home runs from Andrew Fischer and Damon Keith. In the 10th, the Blue Wahoos scored four runs against Shuckers infielder Jheremy Vargas, including a sacrifice fly from Dylan Jasso, a two-run double from Cristian Hernandez and an RBI single from Brandon Compton. In the bottom of the inning, the Shuckers made it a one-run game with a two-run home run from Mark Coley II and a solo home run from Daniel Guilarte. Colby Martin (5-4) earned the win while Jheremy Vargas (0-1) took the loss. Nigel Belgrave earned his seventh save of the season.
At the plate, Matthew Wood (3-for-5), Damon Keith (3-for-3) and Mark Coley II (2-for-4) each recorded multi-hit performances for the Shuckers. All 10 Shuckers that appeared in the game recorded a hit, with five recording an RBI. With four home runs, the Shuckers are 10 away from breaking the single-season franchise record of 154, set in 2022.
The series continues on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Keesler Federal Park. Manuel Rodriguez (10-4, 4.93) is scheduled to start for the Shuckers against Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (2-4, 6.46) for the Blue Wahoos. It’s the 10th Fireworks Friday of the season presented by Island View Casino Resort, which will shoot off at the conclusion of the contest. The Shuckers will host their annual Fight Like a Shucker Night in Partnership with the Heart of a Shucker Cancer Alliance supporting St. Baldricks Foundation, Pink Heart Funds, and SoSo Strong Foundation. The team will also make a donation to a local non-profit through the team’s Heart of a Shucker Community Fund.
