PENSACOLA, FL – The Biloxi Shuckers (64-67, 29-37) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (78-56, 42-23), 7-2, at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night. Despite the loss, Andrew Fischer hit his 47th home run of the season between High-A and Double-A, breaking Ryan Howard’s record for the most by a Minor League player this century. The home run also moved Fischer into sole possession of fifth place for the most in the Modern Era of Minor League Baseball (since 1963). The 47 home runs mark the most by a player in the minors since 1982, when Ron Kittle hit 50 with the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers.
The Shuckers fell behind 3-0 after three innings with an RBI double from Payton Green and RBI single from Emaarion Boyd in the second and a solo home run from Aiva Arquette in the third. In the fourth, the Shuckers got on the board with Matthew Wood’s 18th home run of the season, a 450-foot blast to right, extending his career high. The Blue Wahoos struck back in the fifth with a two-run home run to right from Max Williams, making it 5-1. Andrew Fischer made it 5-2 in the sixth with his historic home run, a 101 MPH, 403-foot solo shot to right. In the eighth, an error that allowed Cristian Hernández to score from third and an RBI single from Dylan Jasso made it 7-2. Luis Moreno (7-7) earned the win while Jaron DeBerry (8-9) took the loss. Nigel Belgrave picked up his 10th save of the season after three perfect innings to finish the game.
Jheremy Vargas (2-for-3) was the lone Shucker to record a multi-hit performance. Joshua Quezada (1.1ip, 2k) worked a scoreless relief appearance in his Double-A debut. Quezada became the first player in the organization to make an appearance at all four full-season levels this season.
The series continues on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. J.D. Thompson (0-3, 3.63) is slated to start for the Shuckers against Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (3-4, 6.06) for the Blue Wahoos.
