
PENSACOLA, FL – Behind a third straight brilliant performance from Bishop Letson and multi-RBI performances from Damon Keith and Matthew Wood, the Biloxi Shuckers took a 1-0 lead in the Southern League Division Series with a 6-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Tuesday night. With the win, the Shuckers took a lead in a playoff series for the first time since September 10, 2019, against the Jackson Generals in the Southern League Championship Series. The Shuckers are set to enter Thursday one win away from reaching the SLCS for the fourth time in franchise history.
The Shuckers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a solo home run from Damon Keith to left, breaking a no-hit bid from Blue Wahoos starter Jacob Kisting. Later in the inning, Dylan O’Rae made it 2-0 with an RBI single into right, scoring Mike Boeve. The Blue Wahoos struck back with an RBI single from Max Williams in the fifth, making it 2-1. The Shuckers struck for three runs in the sixth and extended the lead to 5-1 with an RBI double from Josh Adamczewski and a two-RBI double from Matthew Wood. In the seventh, Cristian Hernández made it 5-3 with a two-RBI single. Damon Keith scored a vital insurance run in the ninth, making it 6-3.
Bishop Letson earned the win after allowing one run over 5.0 innings with four strikeouts, while Jacob Kisting took the loss for the Blue Wahoos. Across his last three starts, Letson has allowed four runs in 16.0 innings with 22 strikeouts. Ryan Birchard picked up his first save since June 4 with a perfect ninth inning. Out of the bullpen, Travis Smith (1.1ip, 2k) recorded a hold and stranded two inherited runners after entering in the seventh. At the plate, Andrew Fischer (2-for-4), Matthew Wood (2-for-4) and Damon Keith (2-for-4) each recorded multi-hit performances.
After an off day on Wednesday, the series continues with game two at Keesler Federal Park on Thursday, September 17. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. J.D. Thompson (0-3, 4.33) is slated to start for the Shuckers against Eliazar Dishmey (4-1, 3.30) for the Blue Wahoos.
