BILOXI, MS – Despite a career-high-tying nine strikeouts from Bishop Letson and a Minor League-leading 44th home run of the season from Andrew Fischer, the Biloxi Shuckers (61-64, 26-34) fell to the Birmingham Barons (56-73, 30-30), 3-2, at Keesler Federal Park on Thursday night. Fischer’s home run, his 24th at the Double-A level and 44th on the year, tied him with Greg Hiatt (2001) and Greg Brock (1982) for the eighth-most in a single season in Minor League Baseball’s Modern Era (since 1963).
The Barons took an early 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Anthony DePino in the first, scoring Dylan Campbell from third. In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Fischer’s two-run blast gave the Shuckers a 2-1 lead. The Barons tied the game in the third with a solo home run from Anthony DePino to center and took the lead in the ninth when a wild pitch scored Jordan Sprinkle from third, making it 3-2. Phil Fox (3-4) earned the win for the Barons while Ryan Birchard (2-3) took the loss for the Shuckers. Jackson Kelley also earned his ninth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
On the mound, Shuckers starter Bishop Letson set a new Double-A high with nine strikeouts and retired 14 of his final 19 batters faced after four straight reached to begin the game. The Shuckers staff recorded 16 strikeouts during the game, including multiple from relievers Travis Smith (3) and Ryan Birchard (3). Matthew Wood (2-for-4) recorded the lone multi-hit performance for the Shuckers.
The series continues on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. It’s the 12th Fireworks Friday of the season, which will shoot off at the conclusion of the game. Fans can join the Shuckers as they thank the men and women who serve at Keesler Air Force Base during Keesler Appreciation Night. The Shuckers will wear their alternate military-themed jerseys for the occasion. The team will also make a donation to a local non-profit through the team’s Heart of a Shucker Community Fund. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. with the On-Deck Show on the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network and The Hype 100.9.
