
HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Biloxi Shuckers (55-56, 20-26) fell to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (58-56, 23-23), 7-3, in a series opener at Toyota Field on Tuesday night. Despite the loss, Milwaukee Brewers second-ranked prospect Luis Peña recorded a hit and reached base twice in his Double-A debut, becoming the third teenager to record a hit in a game in Shuckers franchise history, joining Jackson Chourio and Jesús Made.
The Trash Pandas raced out to a 3-0 lead after three innings with a pair of home runs, including a two-run blast from Jacob Cozart in the first and a solo shot from Arjun Nimmala in the third. The Shuckers got on the board in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Andrew Fischer, scoring Dylan O’Rae. In the bottom of the inning, Cole Fontenelle made it 5-1 with a two-run double to right. The Shuckers then made it 5-3 in the seventh with an RBI double from Damon Keith and an RBI groundout from Mike Boeve. The Trash Pandas responded with a pair of runs in the eighth with RBI doubles from Caleb Bartolero and Cole Fontenelle, making it 7-3.
Austin Gordon (7-6) earned the win while J.D. Thompson (0-2) took the loss for the Shuckers, despite striking out a career-high eight over 4.0 innings. Kenyan Yovan earned his 12th save of the season. The Shuckers pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts on the night, including seven from reliever Stiven Cruz, his most in a Double-A appearance.
The series continues on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Toyota Field. No starter has been announced for the Shuckers, while Lucas Knowles (1-1, 4.62) is set to start for the Trash Pandas.
