Shuckers Drop Series-Opener to Blue Wahoos on Tuesday Night

Vargas extends hit streak to 4, Broca ties season-high with 3.0 innings

BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers (55-50, 20-20) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (60-49, 24-16), 12-0, at Keesler Federal Park on Tuesday night in a series opener.

The Blue Wahoos struck first with a four-run second inning, including an RBI single from Dylan Jasso and a three-run home run from Colby Shade. A two-run home run from Cristian Hernández in the third and a two-run home run from Aiva Arquette in the fourth made it 7-0. Three more runs crossed the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Jasso, an error that allowed Cristian Hernández to score and an RBI base-loaded walk from Juan Matheus. A pair of RBI singles from Payton Green in the seventh and Juan Matheus in the ninth made it 12-0. Holt Jones (3-0) earned the win for the Blue Wahoos while Jaron DeBerry (7-6) took the loss for the Shuckers.

At the plate, Jheremy Vargas (1-for-3) extended his hit streak to four consecutive games while Jesús Broca tied his season-high with 3.0 relief innings. The game also featured the first professional start at first base for Andrew Fischer.

The series continues on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Keesler Federal Park. J.D. Thompson is set to take his Double-A debut for the Shuckers against Luis Moreno (5-6, 5.94) for the Blue Wahoos.
