FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Minor League Baseball has announced Fort Wayne TinCaps outfielder Alex McCoy as its Midwest League Player of the Week for July 28 to Aug. 2.
Across five games, the No. 19 Padres prospect batted .421 (8-for-19)/.542/.947, ranking second in the league in slugging percentage (.947), OPS (1.489), runs (8), and home runs (3). McCoy finished tied for fourth in batting average (.421), on-base percentage (.542), and total bases (18), fifth in stolen bases (3), seventh in walks (5), eighth in hits (8), and 10th in RBI (6).
McCoy is the first TinCap to win Player of the Week since MLB’s No. 2 prospect Leo De Vries became the first-ever TinCap to win the award in back-to-back weeks from April 21 to May 4, 2025.
On the very first pitch McCoy saw on Tuesday, the Baltimore, Maryland native crushed a two-run home run to left field in Fort Wayne’s 5-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers affiliate). On Friday, the undrafted free agent signee out of Hofstra University went 3-for-5, scoring the game’s first run on an RBI double in the sixth inning before adding a pair of singles and stolen bases.
Before Saturday’s suspension due to weather in the second inning, McCoy collected the first multi-home run game of his career. Both on the very first pitch of the at-bat, McCoy sent a two-run home run over the left field wall in the first before going back-to-back with Jack Costello on a solo home run to right field in the second.
The 24-year-old outfielder leads the Midwest League with 26 doubles this season, is tied for second in hits (94) and extra-base hits (42) and ranks third in total bases (167).
He also leads the team in home runs (15) and RBI (53), as well as multi-hit (26) and multi-RBI (14) games.
Earlier this season, McCoy earned Midwest League Player of the Month honors for April, becoming the sixth TinCap player to win Player of the Month since the Midwest League began issuing the award in 2013. He joined De Vries, current Cleveland Guardians left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo (June 2019), DH Hudson Potts (August 2017), C Austin Allen (April 2016), and OF Nick Shultz (August 2014).
The ‘Caps are winners of seven of their last eight following their second-consecutive series win. Fort Wayne is now just one game back of the top spot in the Midwest League Second Half Eastern Division Standings, tied for second with the West Michigan Whitecaps.
The TinCaps return home tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 4, to start a six-game series against the Tigers-affiliate Whitecaps.
