MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (67-51) (31-23) have struck out at least 15 batters in the each of the last three games, tonight they punched out 16 Lansing Lugnuts (53-65) (24-30) in a 5-4 win on a 76-degree partly cloudy Tuesday night at Dow Diamond.
- Sterling Patick matched a career-best with eight strikeouts in tonight’s start. The left-hander punched out the side in the fourth inning. Lansing plated two runs with three hits against Patick, all in the second inning. Jake Reinisch had three of his team’s six hits with a solo home run.
- The Loons tallied a run in the third, fourth and fifth inning. Eduardo Quintero ripped a triple to left center in the third, he was plated by a Chuck Davalan sacrifice fly to left field. Eduardo Guerrero scored Nico Perez with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The first two runs came against Jose Parra in his High-A debut. In the fifth, it was Perez’s turn to drive in a run with an opposite-field RBI single.
- Matt Lanzendorfer kept Lansing off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, an error kickstarted a two-run seventh for the Lugnuts. Lansing hit three singles, Pedro Pineda and Jake Reinisch went back-to-back with a misplay in left field on Reinisch’s single scoring a run. 18-year-old Breyson Guedez hit a go-ahead single to right field off Robby Porco to grab a 4-3 lead.
- The Loons reclaimed the lead with two singles, a sacrifice fly and a pair of wild pitches. Mairo Martinus and Eduardo Guerrero started the bottom of the eighth with hits to put runners on the corners. Victor Rodrigues scooted Martinus’ home with a deep sacrifice fly to right field. With two outs, Lugnuts reliever Abel Mercedes threw a pitch in the dirt that bounced away and brought home Guerrero.
- Davis Chastain has earned the final three outs in back-to-back games. The right-hander earned his eighth save of the season, striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Rounding Things Out
West Michigan lost 2-0 to Peoria today. The Loons now have a 0.5 game lead over the Whitecaps in the Midwest League East Division second half standings. Great Lakes has 12 games remaining this season.
