
Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs’ catcher Johanfran Garcia “The User Name” has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of August 24-30.
Garcia appeared in four games for the Sea Dogs during the week, where he hit a league-best .556 (10-for-18) with six runs scored, three home runs, and eight RBI. Garcia hit safely in all four games, including three three-hit nights. His biggest night came on Saturday, August 29th, when he went 3-for-5 with two three-run homers, one in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, and six RBI in a 14-3 Sea Dogs win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
Garica led the league in average (.556), OBP (.619), SLG (1.056), and OPS (1.675). His three home runs and eight RBI were tied for second most in the league. Only his teammate Justin Gonzalez had more RBIs for the week with nine.
In 72 games this season for the Sea Dogs, Garcia is hitting .293 with ten doubles, 17 home runs and 51 RBI.
The 21-year-old is ranked by MLB.com as the No.29 prospect in the Red Sox organization. He was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent on January 15, 2022. He is the younger brother of former Sea Dog Jhostynxon Garcia “The Password”.
This marks the second time this season Garcia has earned Eastern League Player of the Week honors, previously earning the honor for the week of June 8-14. Sea Dogs players have earned Eastern League Player or Pitcher of the Week honors ten times this season. Previous Eastern League Player of the Week winners for this season include Ronald Rosario (July 13-19), Garcia (June 8-14), and Brooks Brannon (May 4-10). While the list of Sea Dogs’ pitchers that have earned Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors includes Max Carlson (July 20-July 26), Blake Wehunt (June 22-28, June 30-July 5), Anthony Eyanson (May 18-24), Patrick Halligan (May 11-17), and John Holobetz (April 13-19). Additionally, Franklin Arias was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for April.
The Sea Dogs take on the Chesapeake Baysox this week in Bowie, Maryland, before returning home for their final homestand of the season, September 8-13.
