Bowie, MD – A sixth inning rally proved to be enough as the Portland Sea Dogs (29-29)(64-62) fell 6-4 to the Chesapeake Baysox (32-25)(61-64) in their series opener Tuesday night.
Henry Godbout launched a two-run home run. Will Turner was two-for-four with a double, scoring two of the Sea Dogs’ four runs. Nelly Taylor and Caden Rose also hit doubles, with Rose driving in a run. LHP Dalton Rogers had an excellent start, going 5.0 one-hit, scoreless innings before allowing three runs on two home runs in the sixth inning.
After a tense pitching battle, Taylor doubled to lead off the third. With two outs, Godbout’s home run gave Portland a 2-0 lead.
Chesapeake exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Aron Estrada singled and Vance Honeycutt homered, tying the game. Ethan Anderson went back-to-back with Honeycut and hit a home run of his own, pushing the Baysox into the lead. After a pitching change, Chesapeake stacked together two more singles plus a hit batter, before a Thomas Sosa single drove in a pair of runs, extending the lead to 5-2.
Will Turner singled to lead off the seventh inning, and scored from first on Rose’s RBI double.
The Baysox added an insurance run with a Victor Figueroa RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Turner hit a one-out double. Max Ferguson singled to put runners on the corners. Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Turner, cutting the lead to 6-4. That was all the Sea Dogs could muster, as Rose flew out to end the game.
RHP Richard Guasch (3-0, 1.86 ERA) earned the win, allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.0 inning of work. LHP Dalton Rogers (2-5, 5.80 ERA) shouldered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. RHP Jeisson Cabrera (S, 6) earned the save.
Tomorrow, the series continues, with LHP Hayden Mullins (3-5, 4.46 ERA) set to face LHP Joseph Dzierwa (3-1, 2.21 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Prince George’s Stadium.
