Injuries & Moves: Keith (left knee) avoids major injury in collision

June 9: 2B (left knee discomfort) day to day after collision
Though Keith was sporting a decent-sized bruise on his knee and was walking gingerly around the clubhouse Sunday morning, he seems to have avoided a major injury from his collision with Akil Baddoo on Saturday. Examination from team doctors showed no structural damage, he said, and he was able to get on the field for some light work Sunday morning.

“I don’t think anything’s long-term hurt, so that’s good,” Keith said.

The Tigers are off Monday before starting a three-game series against the Nationals, who are scheduled to start left-hander Mitchell Parker in Tuesday’s series opener. Keith would likely be out of the lineup against a lefty starter regardless, so the Tigers could conceivably not need him until Wednesday, giving him four days to let the bruising heal.

June 9: RHP (low back tightness) has next start pushed back
The Tigers will use Monday’s off-day to start Kenta Maeda, Reese Olson and Casey Mize on regular rest against the Nationals, pushing back Jack Flaherty’s next start to next weekend’s series in Houston. They could conceivably wait until Saturday to throw Flaherty without needing a fill-in starter, giving his back more time to rest after it locked up on him in his last start on June 4 in Texas.

“We’re being pretty cautious with Jack, just to make sure,” manager A.J. Hinch said.

Flaherty, who played catch on Friday without issue, progressed to the bullpen mound on Sunday morning for a mound session. He looked to be throwing without issue. Maeda, meanwhile, has recovered well after leaving his last start June 4 with right-side abdominal discomfort.

June 7: INF traded to Phillies for cash considerations
The Tigers designated Kennedy for assignment on June 3 to open a 40-man roster spot for Justyn-Henry Malloy. He played six games for the Tigers in April, going 2-for-10 with a home run and four RBIs while playing solid defense. His chances of a return, along with playing time at Triple-A Toledo, were set to drop with the return of Ryan Kreidler and Eddys Leonard from the injured list. Instead of potentially losing him for nothing on waivers, Detroit traded the Millville, New Jersey, native to his local team; his grandfather, Don Money, played for the Phillies from 1968-72. Friday marked Money’s 77th birthday.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

OF (lumbar spine stress fracture)
Expected return: TBD
Carpenter has been rehabbing at Comerica Park but is not close to resuming baseball activity at this point. “He’s doing a lot of therapy and a lot of work, but to get things to heal, there’s zero baseball activity,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “There’s not much to speak of on the baseball front. On the rehab front, whether it’s heat, whether it’s exercises, those aren’t really glorious to talk about or write about, but it’s just general physical therapy that he’s going through until he can introduce baseball activity in the weeks ahead.” (Last updated: June 9)

RHP (right hip inflammation)
Expected return: Hopefully June
Faedo underwent imaging on his hip on June 6 and will get further evaluation, but was able to do some on-field workouts on June 7. He went on the injured list after complaining of hip pain following his June 4 outing at Texas. The former first-round Draft pick previously underwent hip surgery in 2022. (Last updated: June 7)

RHP (left hamstring strain; Tigers' No. 1 prospect, MLB No. 10)
Expected return: Possibly June
Jobe is throwing bullpen sessions after straining his left hamstring following through on a pitch during a start for Double-A Erie on May 1. The Tigers are expected to be cautious with his timetable so as not to risk Jobe putting his arm in danger of injury by compensating for his hamstring. (Last updated: May 29)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP (left groin strain, right forearm tightness)
Expected return: 2025
After having UCL repair surgery on his right elbow, Gipson-Long is completing rehab daily in Lakeland, Fla. The Tigers transferred him to the 60-day injured list on May 7 to open a 40-man roster spot. (Last updated: May 7)
