"Keep the inning alive" is a mantra attributable to nearly every baseball coach in the history of the game. The idea, generally, is that the longer the inning keeps going, the more chances one's team will have to score runs.
It turns out, this seemingly obvious truth is not always true as Eric Young Jr. showed with his effort to extend the second inning of Thursday night's 10-5 win over the Yankees:
Young Jr.'s evasive maneuver undoubtedly extended the inning by a couple seconds. The added length, however, had no discernible impact on the Angels' run expectancy ... as far as we know.
