A foul ball forced Andrew McCutchen to retreat from the on-deck circle to the dugout

Keep your eye on the ball. It's the first thing we're taught when playing baseball. If you skipped that lesson on the first day of practice, Denis Leary kindly covered it for you in The Sandlot.
Although that most basic of baseball wisdoms may have resulted in a black eye for Scotty Smalls, it paid off in a big way for Andrew McCutchen in the first inning of Tuesday's Pirates game against the Brewers.

A foul ball off the bat of Josh Bell came straight at McCutchen while he was standing in the on-deck circle, but, like any good ballplayer, his eye was on the ball and he managed to get out of the way. Let it be said that Andrew McCutchen is a rational man and, as such, he responded in the most rational way possible: getting the heck out of harm's way and waiting out the rest of Bell's at-bat in the relative safety of the dugout.
Bell walked on the very next pitch, which brought a suddenly hyper-alert McCutchen to the plate. Whether by coincidence or not, Cutch ripped the first pitch he saw for a two-run double. Maybe the Pirates should try scaring Cutch before his at-bats, just in case.
