Haynal Bros. form battery for the Philippines in World Baseball Classic Qualifier

In the first game of Thursday's World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, South Africa handed New Zealand a 7-1 loss in spite of its pregame war dance ritual. But if baseball is a game of fathers and sons, it's also (sort of) a game of brothers -- as evidenced by manager Alan Phillips and his sons Anthony and Jonathan, who were a big part of the South African team's victory, going a combined 3-for-8 with two runs.
Not to be outdone, the team from the Philippines had its own set of brothers, and they worked more cooperatively than the Phillips Bros., forming a battery in the fifth inning. Right-handed reliever Austin Haynal was called upon to pitch the fifth to his brother, catcher Brad Haynal.
Both Haynal brothers attended San Diego State, where Brad excelled and became the 18th-round pick of the Marlins in the 2014 MLB Draft. Last year, he lined an RBI single into left field in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game:
Austin struggled with his control a bit on Thursday, walking two in his two-thirds of an inning of work. Australia went on to win, 11-1, in seven innings in a game called by the mercy rule.
