Want to catch some of the top Marlins prospects share the same field before they do so in the big leagues?

Here’s what to know about the Marlins’ preliminary 40-man roster for the third annual Spring Breakout.

What is Spring Breakout?

In 2026, MLB Spring Breakout will again be a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball – in 16 exhibition games played between teams composed of each MLB organization’s top prospects. The third edition will be held from March 19-22 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training.

In 2027, Spring Breakout will be expanded into a single-elimination tournament format, with champions being crowned in both the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

When is the Marlins’ game?

Marlins prospects will face Astros prospects on March 19 at the CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. ET.

Notable position players

A duo of Top 100 prospects headline the Marlins’ position-player contingent: outfielder Owen Caissie (No. 42) and catcher Joe Mack (No. 62).

Caissie, whom the Marlins acquired in the Edward Cabrera trade with the Cubs, was at big league camp before joining Team Canada for the World Baseball Classic. With Agustín Ramírez and Liam Hicks competing at the Classic for the Dominican Republic and Canada, respectively, Mack is seeing regular action behind the dish as the remaining 40-man-roster backstop at camp.

Shortstop Aiva Arquette (MLB Pipeline’s No. 47 overall prospect) was originally on the roster, but he recently underwent core muscle surgery and is rehabbing.

Other noteworthy names include shortstop Starlyn Caba (Marlins No. 7 prospect, Jesús Luzardo trade) and outfielder Cam Cannarella (No. 8 prospect, Competitive Balance Round A pick in 2025). After a thumb injury limited him to just 51 games at Single-A Jupiter, Caba impressed with an .828 OPS in 18 Arizona Fall League games. Like Arquette, Cannarella made his professional debut at High-A Beloit, where he posted a .712 OPS in 22 games.

Notable pitchers

Leading the charge was supposed to be the Top 100 lefty duo of Thomas White (No. 17 prospect) and Robby Snelling (No. 39), but the former sustained a right oblique strain.

The 21-year-old White, a non-roster invitee at big league camp along with the 22-year-old Snelling, had started Miami’s first two Spring Breakouts. Both arms are expected to start the season at Triple-A Jacksonville and should make their Major League debuts in 2026.

Right-hander Kevin Defrank, one of the better pitching prospects to come out of the Dominican Republic in recent memory when he signed in January 2025, will make his stateside debut in ‘26. Miami’s No. 6 prospect has flashed triple digits on the back fields this spring.

Another arm to watch is righty Karson Milbrandt (Marlins No. 10 prospect), who was High-A Beloit’s MVP in 2025. After being named an Arizona Fall League Fall Star, Milbrandt received a non-roster invite to big league camp.

Roster details

To accommodate the player movement involved with the World Baseball Classic and to create greater flexibility for clubs and farm directors, Spring Breakout rosters are being constructed in two phases in 2026. Clubs initially submit a preliminary 40-man player pool on Thursday, March 5, which will then be pared down to the official 23-27 man rosters on March 18.

The preliminary 40-man player pools consist of the team’s Top 30 prospects, as determined by MLB Pipeline, minus any injured players, players on a Dominican Summer League roster or players on the 40-man roster who have elected not to participate. The pools also include 10 or more additional unranked prospects submitted by the club to replace the above ranked prospects who are not participating.
