The key injuries for every LCS team

The postseason field is down to four teams, with the Padres taking on the Phillies in the NLCS and the Astros squaring off with the Yankees in the ALCS.

Here's a breakdown of the injury situation for each remaining team.

ASTROS

Out for postseason: OF Michael Brantley (right shoulder surgery), RHP Phil Maton (right hand surgery), C Jason Castro (left knee surgery), RHP Josh James (right flexor tendon surgery)
The Astros have been without Brantley since June. After losing Castro to a left knee injury, the Astros acquired Christian Vázquez from the Red Sox at the Trade Deadline to split time behind the plate with Martín Maldonado. Maton, who had a 0.73 ERA over 12 appearances for Houston in the 2021 postseason and finished 2022 with a 3.84 ERA in 65 2/3 innings, fractured his right hand when he punched his locker in frustration after his final outing of the regular season.

PADRES

Out for postseason: SS Fernando Tatis Jr. (left wrist fracture, left shoulder surgery), RHP Austin Adams (right flexor tendon surgery), LHP Drew Pomeranz (left flexor tendon surgery)
After finishing third in the NL MVP race in 2021, Tatis has missed all of this season. The shortstop had surgery to repair a fracture in his left wrist in March, and when he was nearly ready to return, he was suspended 80 games for a performance-enhancing drug violation. Tatis later underwent surgery on his left shoulder, which he has dislocated multiple times in the past.

PHILLIES

Available: RHP David Robertson (calf strain)
Robertson was left off the NLDS roster after straining his calf while jumping when Bryce Harper homered in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series, but he's back for the NLCS.

Out for postseason: RHP Corey Knebel (torn capsule in right shoulder, injured, right lat), RHP Mark Appel (right elbow inflammation), RHP Hans Crouse (right biceps tendinitis), LHP Kent Emanuel (left shoulder strain), LHP Damon Jones (left shoulder impingement), RHP James McArthur (right elbow stress reaction), OF Símon Muzziotti (partial tear of right patellar tendon)
The most notable name here is Knebel, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Phillies in December and took on the closer role at the beginning of 2022. The right-hander had some ups and downs in the first half but was unscored upon in 17 of his last 18 games before his injury.

YANKEES

Available: RHP Frankie Montas (right shoulder inflammation)
Montas has been activated from the injured list for the ALCS. The 2022 Trade Deadline acquisition, who posted a 6.35 ERA over eight starts for the Yankees before his injury, could pitch as a reliever or an opener against Houston.

Return TBD: INF DJ LeMahieu (right second toe inflammation), OF Andrew Benintendi (broken bone in right hand), RHP Ron Marinaccio (stress reaction in right shin), RHP Albert Abreu (right elbow inflammation)
The Yankees were hoping LeMahieu, Benintendi and Marinaccio would be able to return by the ALCS, but none of the three was included on the roster.

Out for postseason: OF Aaron Hicks (left knee), RHP Michael King (right elbow fracture), RHP Chad Green (Tommy John surgery), LHP Zack Britton (left shoulder fatigue), RHP Stephen Ridings (right shoulder impingement), Scott Effross (Tommy John surgery)
Hicks exited Game 5 of the ALDS after colliding with shortstop Oswaldo Cabrera on a shallow fly ball down the left-field line during the top of the third inning. In the postgame celebration, Hicks said that he had undergone an MRI and CT scan, and that he was told he would need six weeks to recover, meaning he will be out for the rest of the postseason. King took on a more important role and stepped up in a big way after Green had to undergo Tommy John surgery, but he too suffered a season-ending injury in July. The Yanks were hoping to get a boost from the late-season return of Britton from Tommy John surgery, but the left-hander was shelved for the year with shoulder fatigue after just three appearances. Effross was expected to be on the ALDS roster, but he will require Tommy John surgery.
