ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates added to their pitching depth Tuesday by claiming right-hander A.J. Schugel off waivers from the Mariners. Schugel had been designated for assignment by Seattle on Jan. 12, just one month after the Mariners claimed him off waivers from Arizona.
Schugel, 26, made his Major League debut last season and logged nine innings over five relief appearances with the D-backs. He also made a combined 21 starts with the organization's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates in 2015.

Schugel fared well at Double-A Mobile, posting a 2.21 ERA and 1.151 WHIP over 12 starts (77 1/3 innings). Things got a bit rockier at Triple-A Reno, where Schugel allowed 43 earned runs over 38 innings.
A former Central Arizona College pitcher, Schugel was picked by Arizona in the 25th round of the 2010 Draft. He has a career Minor League ERA of 4.04 over 139 games (109 starts).
The Pirates designated right-hander Yoervis Medina for assignment in order to add Schugel to the 40-man roster.
