Angels-Yanks postponed; twin bill Thursday

NEW YORK -- Wednesday night's Angels-Yankees game was postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather and will be made up as the first game of a split-admission doubleheader on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The second game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Tickets for Wednesday will only be valid for Game 1 of the doubleheader, or they can be exchanged for tickets to another regular-season game (subject to availability).

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who was scheduled to start Thursday night, will start Game 1 of the doubleheader for the Angels. And left-hander Reid Detmers, who was slated to start Wednesday, will get the nod in Game 2.

The Yankees have announced that left-hander Nestor Cortes is scheduled to start Game 1, with right-hander Jameson Taillon set to go in the nightcap.

With rain in the forecast for Thursday, as well, the Angels wanted to pitch Ohtani in the first game in case the second game gets postponed. It will mark the second career start at Yankee Stadium for Ohtani, who struggled there last year, allowing seven runs and recording just two outs.

But Ohtani, the reigning American League MVP, has pitched well this season, posting a 3.45 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings. It'll be the first career start in the Bronx for Detmers, who has a 4.65 ERA in eight starts this season, but notably threw a no-hitter against the Rays on May 10.

Cortes, who had been scheduled to start Wednesday’s washout, has been one of the most compelling stories in the American League this year. Leaning on a funky variety of arm angles and offerings, Cortes is 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA, the second-lowest ERA in the Majors. Taillon is coming off his best start as a Yankee, hurling eight scoreless frames of two-hit ball in a victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field on Friday.
