Anibal latest Tigers starter to land on DL

DETROIT -- The revolving door of the Tigers' recent starting rotation spun again Friday, when Aníbal Sánchez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury.
Sanchez was officially listed with a hamstring strain. Manager Brad Ausmus said it wasn't quite that severe, comparing it to the tightness the righty suffered during his Triple-A Toledo stint in early June. Regardless, Ausmus said it could be more than a 10-day injury, though no timetable is set yet for Sanchez's return.
Outfielder JaCoby Jones was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Sanchez's spot on the roster.
Sanchez suffered the injury on a pickoff throw during his start Wednesday at Texas. His hamstring tightened enough that he said he struggled to locate his pitches, and he left the game in the third inning in the middle of an at-bat.
"Every time I wanted to throw the ball down, especially the way I started the game, that's when I felt it pull," Sanchez said. "It wouldn't let me finish those pitches. I tried to be out there for a while, but I[couldn't]."
Sanchez is the third Tigers starter to land on the DL in the last month. Daniel Norris was sidelined after the All-Star break with a left groin strain; he's currently on a rehab assignment with Toledo with hopes of returning in September. Michael Fulmer spent 10 days on the DL with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow before returning last Monday at Texas.
Injuries have played a role in Sanchez's struggles over the past few seasons. Most of the injuries have been arm-related, from rotator cuff inflammation two years ago to a right middle finger laceration in 2014 and a right shoulder strain in '13. He has never had a significant leg injury in his Major League career.
Between Thursday's off-day and another off-day coming up Monday, the Tigers can go without a fifth starter until next Saturday at the White Sox. Even if Sanchez's DL stint is minimal, however, he won't be eligible to return until the day after that game. So the Tigers will need someone to fill in, whether it's Drew VerHagen returning from the bullpen for a spot start or a starter coming up from Triple-A Toledo.
For now, the Tigers are back to four reserve position players with the return of Jones, up for his third stint with Detroit this season. He's batting 7-for-51 (.137) with four walks and 26 strikeouts for the Tigers.
