50-game Beat the Streak run ends in wild fashion

A 50-game Beat the Streak run came to an end in crushing fashion on Monday night.

User "lotank" was closing in on historic territory in their quest to reach 56 games, and they chose to ride with Jacob Wilson. The sweet-swinging A's rookie came into his final at-bat without a hit, but he blooped a ball into no-man's land in right field that dropped in between three players. The only problem? Max Schuemann, who was on first base, wasn't sure it would drop and was forced out at second base. That meant Wilson finished the game without a knock, and "lotank's" streak was over.

With seven more correct picks, lotank would have become the first winner of Beat the Streak's $5.6 million prize in the 24-season history of the game. Two more, and he would have had the longest streak in the game's history.

The goal is to beat Joe DiMaggio's MLB-best 56-game hitting streak, which the Yankee Clipper accomplished over two historic months in 1941.

Since Beat the Streak's inception in 2001, more than 100 users have reached streaks of 40 or more, including two streaks of 51. More than 5 million unique users have played.
