250 for 250: Top 10 bloopers

As part of our celebration of America 250, MLB's content team has created 25 top 10 lists that capture the plays, people, rituals and moments that made baseball America’s game. We’ll be revealing five lists per week over the course of five weeks.

1. Canseco's header leads to homer
May 26, 1993

You've seen it a million times. In 1993, Cleveland's Carlos Martinez drove a ball to right field that Jose Canseco tracked toward the wall at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. He reached up to make the catch, but then the ball inexplicably bounced off the top of his head and over the wall for a homer. Everyone had a laugh in the moment, and the chuckles have continued for more than three decades.

2. O'Neill's improbable kick
July 5, 1989

Sometimes, you just have to punt. Even in baseball. That's basically what Reds right fielder Paul O'Neill did in a game in 1989. A would-be walk-off single landed in front of O'Neill, who bobbled it in his attempt to corral it for a throw home. Thinking the game was over, O'Neill kicked the ball in frustration -- right to first baseman Todd Benzinger. And, shockingly, the runner held at third.

3. Lasorda takes a tumble
2001 All-Star Game

Tommy Lasorda knew how to find the spotlight during his time as Dodgers manager, but he was retired when he unintentionally found it during the 2001 All-Star Game. Vladimir Guerrero took a swing and lost his bat, which helicoptered toward Lasorda, who was in the third-base coach's box as an honorary coach. The bat hit him on the fly and he tumbled backward. He was fine, which made it pretty funny.

4. Bobby V.'s hilarious but unconvincing disguise
June 9, 1999

Bobby Valentine won more games than he lost as a big league manager, but perhaps his most enduring moment came when he got ejected from a game and then tried to sneak back into the dugout in a silly disguise. After getting the heave-ho in the 12th inning of a game on June 9, 1999, Valentine changed clothes, donned a fake mustache and sunglasses and went back into the dugout. Absolutely nobody was fooled.

5. Reds grounds crew fights tarp monster
July 17, 2023

The tarp monster is a savage beast. This was perhaps never more evident than when the Reds ground crew fought the monster valiantly during a game in 2023. The terrifying tarpaulin was angry and put up a good fight, even temporarily devouring a crew member. Multiple guys went down and wrestled the monster in a knock-down, drag-out fight before the crew ultimately emerged victorious. Impressive grit all around.

6. Manny cuts off throw ... for some reason
July 21, 2004

After Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon failed to make a leaping catch on a deep drive from Baltimore's David Newhan at the wall during a 2004 game, he quickly recovered the ball and threw a seed toward the infield. But left fielder Manny Ramirez, who was maybe 50 feet away, dove to his left to cut it off for some reason. That slowed things down enough for Newhan to circle the bases.

7. Lyons drops his drawers
July 16, 1990

Never forget where you are, especially if you're gonna pull down your pants. That's what White Sox utility man Steve Lyons learned in 1990. After diving into first base following a drag bunt, Lyons stood up, unbuckled his belt and, apparently forgetting where he was, pulled his pants down to get the dirt out. He quickly remembered where he was and pulled his drawers up in embarrassment, earning a place in blooper immortality.

8. Watch the hair, Miggy!
May 23, 2014

They say baseball is a brotherhood. But sometimes, players can act like literal siblings. That's kind of what happened with Miguel Cabrera and Adrian Beltré during a game in 2014. Like a little brother who has found a way to annoy his older brother, Miggy kept touching Beltré's head during a visit to third base. Just to mess with him. And like any bothered big brother, Beltré wasn't amused. But Cabrera sure was.

9. Walker forgets the number of outs!
April 24, 1994

Every player has mental lapses. They're usually just not as glaring as the one Larry Walker had at Dodger Stadium in 1994, when the future Hall of Famer ranged into foul territory in right field to make an easy catch, then handed the ball to a fan in the stands and headed toward the dugout. But, well, that was only the second out, which allowed the runner on first to tag up and advance two bases. Oops!

10. Randle blows a ball foul
May 27, 1981

When a swinging bunt from the Royals' Amos Otis rolled along the third base line and refused to go foul, Mariners third baseman Lenny Randle took matters into his own ... uh ... breath? When he realized the natural laws of physics would be of no help, Randle went to the ground and blew on the ball until it went foul. But you can't do that, and Otis was awarded a hit. You can't blame a guy for trying.
