ATLANTA -- When the Braves brought Adonis García back from the disabled list last week, they gave him a chance to prove he deserved to stay in their starting lineup. But the third baseman will now miss at least the next 10 days with a different ailment.
Before Wednesday night's 14-1 victory over the Phillies, the Braves announced Garcia had been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left ring finger. Outfielder Lane Adams was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill a bench spot.
Garcia felt discomfort when he took a swing during the ninth inning of Tuesday night's loss to the Phillies. He completed the at-bat and seemed to provide some favorable signs as he took swings in the indoor batting cages on Wednesday afternoon. But the Braves ultimately decided they could not risk going short on their already short bench for a few days.
Rio Ruiz will now serve as Atlanta's starting third baseman. This is the same role Ruiz filled when Garcia was on the disabled list from May 16-June 1 with left Achilles tendinitis.
Garcia went 6-for-19 with a double in the five games played since returning from the DL on Friday. He will be eligible to be activated on June 18.
