MINNEAPOLIS -- It’s not a done deal yet, but it’s looking like Byron Buxton could return to the Twins’ active roster for Thursday’s MLB at Field Of Dreams Game in Iowa.
Buxton has been out since July 28 as he attempts to put a nagging right hip injury behind him. He went through a workout on Monday, running the bases and hitting on the field, and felt good when he came in Tuesday. On Wednesday, Twins manager Derek Shelton acknowledged that Buxton’s return might be imminent.
“Tomorrow is a possibility,” Shelton said prior to the Twins’ Wednesday afternoon game against Baltimore. “I don’t want to say tomorrow is the day. … As we continue to add volume, and Monday was the big day of adding a ton of volume. We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”
Shelton said that when Buxton is activated, he will play center field and not be limited to designated-hitter duty.
This is Buxton’s second stint on the IL as a result of the hip issue this season. He made the American League All-Star team but missed the game because of the injury. Buxton is hitting .263/.320/.544 with 25 home runs and seven stolen bases this season.
