BOSTON -- Cam Smith drilled a two-run single off the Green Monster with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th inning to send the Astros to a 3-1 win and series victory over the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.
The Astros were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position for the game -- and 3-for-25 in the series -- before Smith’s third hit of the game, which scored Braden Shewmake and Jose Altuve. Earlier in the inning, the Astros had the bases loaded and no outs when Altuve grounded into a double play, but Brice Matthews followed with a walk to load the bases for Smith.
That made a winner out of reliever Bryan Abreu, who came into the game with a 12.54 ERA. He worked a scoreless ninth with one strikeout and threw 12 of his 13 pitches for strikes in the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, the Red Sox loaded the bases against Abreu, who got an inning-ending double play.
This was essentially a bullpen game for the Astros, with starter Cody Bolton throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He was followed by AJ Blubaugh, who threw 59 pitches in 3 2/3 innings -- both season highs -- and allowed one run on a Jarren Duran homer in the fifth.
The Astros tied the game in the sixth when Christian Walker beat out an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matthews.
