Signed by Houston as a 16-year-old prospect out of Santo Domingo, DR on Nov. 11, 2013...signed by Astros scouts Oz Ocampo, Marc Russo and Rafael Belen...At the age of 13 and prior to his professional signing, he worked construction and helped his uncle, a mechanic, fix cars in Santo Domingo...Grew up playing youth basketball in the Dominican, a sport that was taught to him by his mother and father, who both played basketball as children...by the age of 13, he was competing in Under-17 All-Star teams, facing athletes four years older than him...Bryan grew up watching Lakers games with his father, Enrique, with Bryan idolizing the team’s stars, including Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom...He also played recreational baseball, where he was eventually discovered by Buscones, who are unaffiliated baseball scouts, which invited him to join a baseball program at the Olympic Center in Santo Domingo...at the age of 14, was requested by his mother to choose baseball or basketball as a focus...chose baseball and was rewarded with a professional contract just two years later...Abreu, who grew up in Simón Bolívar and Las Cañitas barrios of Santo Domingo, credits his upbringing revolved around sports for keeping him away from drugs and crime, which he saw friends get involved with in his neighborhood...Still loves the game of basketball, and in Spring Training of 2019, Abreu, an unknown prospect at the time, was selected by Justin Verlander to be his partner during a team basketball shooting contest...the contest was never even completed due to Abreu’s and Verlander’s shooting dominance...As a prospect, was a long-term project of former Astros pitching coach Brent Strom, who always believed in Abreu’s abilities...in the offseason prior to the 2022 season, honed in on improving his command while pitching for the Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League...worked with former Astros minor league pitching coach Erick Abreu, who had worked with Bryan at various levels of the Astros organization since his pro debut in 2014...Was added to the Astros 40-man roster on Nov. 20, 2018...was eligible for arbitration for the second time in his career this offseason...is still under control by the Astros for another two years.
