For the first time this season and the first time since joining the Cardinals’ organization as part of the Brendan Donovan trade, Jurrangelo Cijntje recorded an out from both sides of the mound.
The Cardinals’ No. 5 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 81 delivered 4 2/3 strong innings on Tuesday for Double-A Springfield, allowing one earned run and scattering three hits while striking out four and walking three. The Cardinals topped Midland, 5-4.
Facing his first six batters as a righty, Cijntje allowed a leadoff homer, followed by two singles, before settling down and ending the first inning. He came back out for the second with the glove on his left hand and worked a strikeout before turning around.
Cijntje hit the first batter he faced then induced what looked like a potential double-play ball before a throwing error. Those were the only two batters Cijntje faced lefty. Still, it was a big moment for the unique switch-pitcher, who came to the Cardinals with a heavy focus being a right-hander.
The 15th overall pick in 2024, Cijntje lowered his season ERA to 5.50 with 20 total strikeouts in 18 innings. It’s his second stint at the Double-A level, having made seven starts with a 2.67 ERA in 2025 while with the Mariners.
