O's Davis (hip) to IL; righty Phillips recalled

DENVER -- Chris Davis, who hasn't started in a game since Thursday's series finale with the Yankees amid a slump at the plate, has been placed on the 10-day injured list with left hip inflammation, retroactive to Saturday.

Davis began the season hitless until April 13, an MLB-record streak of 62 plate appearances dating back to last September. He began hitting well after that point, slashing .273/.341/.506 through May 17. But in six games since then, Davis is hitting .053 with strikeouts in 13 of 21 plate appearances. Manager Brandon Hyde has been keeping him out of the lineup as a way to give him time to reset mentally.

In a corresponding move, the Orioles called up right-hander Evan Phillips from Triple-A Norfolk. Phillips made 11 appearances for Baltimore earlier this season, posting a 7.11 ERA over 12 2/3 innings. In four outings at Norfolk, he had a 1.29 ERA in seven innings.

Phillips didn't have to wait long before making another MLB appearance following the callup, coming out of the bullpen during Sunday's 8-7 loss, going one-third of an inning while giving up one hit and issuing one walk.

An exhausted Orioles bullpen got a bit of a breather on Saturday, when Miguel Castro and Josh Lucas combined for four innings in a 9-6 victory. But the addition of Phillips will add a reinforcement at Coors Field, where fresh arms are at a premium.

Meanwhile, Mark Trumbo, who is on the IL recovering from right knee surgery, is making steady progress toward a return. In an injury-abbreviated season last year, he slashed .261/.313/.452 with 17 home runs in 90 games.

"He's getting close to going on a rehab assignment," Hyde said. "He hasn't had any setbacks. He's feeling good, playing the field a little bit [in extended spring camp] -- first base, the outfield. So the knee is recovering. He's going to start going out pretty soon."
