Spangenberg taking next step in recovery

SAN DIEGO -- Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg did bunting drills Sunday morning, and while his movement was limited during the workout, that is expected to change soon.
Manager Andy Green said that Spangenberg is scheduled to start running on a treadmill during San Diego's road trip to Baltimore and Cincinnati.
"He's supposed to start running on the AlterG, which is the treadmill that takes a portion of his weight off," Green said. "And hopefully by the time we're back, he's running on ground. Running normal."
Spangenberg's recovery has been slow after reinjuring the left quad May 17 while initially trying to come back quickly, and having a PRP injection that takes time to recover from. That has meant a lot of static workouts for the 25-year-old, who last played in a game April 19.
"Any kind of drill work, no real mobility with it right now," Green said. "He's stationary in all the ground balls he fields, he's stationary in his bunting. Take a few aggressive steps, but he's not running at all right now."
While his return is a ways off -- and far from a set date -- he plans to begin running to mark some progress. Green is anticipating Spangenberg's return around the All-Star break.
Worth noting
• Green said that the Padres were appealing the earned run charged to Colin Rea during the seventh inning Saturday. Brandon Maurer inherited Wilson Ramos from Rea, and Ramos scored in the inning after Maurer misplayed a throw from Wil Myers while covering first base.
• Yangervis Solarte is "still fighting" his left thumb bruise despite being in Sunday's lineup, according to Green. The thumb doesn't hinder his swing from the right side of the plate, and he also had no problems pinch-hitting Saturday, but he is not yet 100 percent healthy.
