DENVER -- The Mets were 10 outs from a sweep of the Rockies and a 5-1 record on their current road trip out West, which concludes with a weekend series against the D-backs in Arizona.

But the Rockies’ Jake McCarthy had other ideas. It was McCarthy’s game-tying double with two outs in the sixth and his grand slam off reliever Craig Kimbrel in the eighth that sunk New York in a 6-2 loss in the series finale at Coors Field on Thursday afternoon.

Things were looking good early for the Mets. They scored twice in the second inning thanks to an Andy Ibáñez sacrifice fly and a Tyrone Taylor RBI single two batters later.

But that would be all the Mets could muster in the hitter-friendly environment of Coors. Starter Christian Scott gave New York 4 2/3 strong innings, yielding one run on three hits and two walks and striking out six.

The bullpen did a solid job until the fateful eighth, when McCarthy’s slam sailed over the right-field foul pole. It was very close to being a foul ball, and the crew chief called for a review, but the fair call stood.

Despite the first two Mets reaching base in the ninth, the deficit was too much to overcome, snapping New York’s three-game win streak.
