Puig expected to rejoin Dodgers on Monday

PHOENIX -- Outfielder Yasiel Puig homered in the first game of his rehab assignment Monday night, and manager Dave Roberts said he tentatively expects Puig to rejoin the club next Monday.
Puig has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 3 with a strained left hamstring. In his first game, Puig homered and walked in three plate appearances.
"I saw the video, he came out of it healthy and the homer was a really good swing," Roberts said Tuesday before a 7-4 win over the D-backs. "It was a line drive to right-center and the mechanics looked better than when he was here. The challenge is for him to sustain that, but it was positive."
Puig was scheduled to play again Tuesday night, rest Wednesday, then play three more games with Class A Rancho Cucamonga and head to Los Angeles. Roberts said it won't be necessary for Puig to face a higher level of competition.
"For certain people, maybe, but in a short stint, it's more for Yasiel to get the hamstring right," Roberts said. "Mechanically, where he was at before, he would have a tough time regardless of what level. And conversely, if his mechanics are right, he can handle any pitching."
Puig was hitting .237 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 53 games when he went on the DL. Since Puig has been sidelined, rookie Trayce Thompson has been the primary right fielder. Thompson was hitting .265 with 10 homers and 23 RBIs in 54 games entering Tuesday.
