Clase, Ortiz remain on leave, will not report to Spring Training

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- MLB has informed the Guardians that pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will remain on leave and will not be permitted to report to Spring Training.

Clase and Ortiz each went on non-disciplinary paid leave last July amid MLB investigations involving sports gambling. The two pitchers were then federally indicted in November by prosecutors in New York on charges related to an alleged scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in MLB games.

The Guardians are set to hold their first official pitchers and catchers workout of Spring Training on Thursday.

MLB placed Ortiz on leave on July 31 through the All-Star break this past season, and then extended it through Aug. 31 two weeks later. Clase was placed on leave on July 28, through Aug. 31. The league extended both pitchers’ leave “until further notice” on Aug. 31.

There remains no timeline for a resolution in each instance.
