Reliever Goeddel signs Minor League deal

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Right-handed reliever Erik Goeddel, who posted a 3.96 ERA in 110 appearances with the Mets over the past four seasons, signed a Minor League deal with the Mariners on Tuesday.
Goeddel, 29, had been granted his release by the Rangers on Monday after compiling a 6.35 ERA in 5 2/3 innings this spring as a non-roster invitee. He allowed seven hits and four runs with six strikeouts and two walks in six outings, including his final appearance Friday against the Mariners in Surprise in which he gave up one hit while recording two outs.

The former UCLA standout had an excellent 2015 season with the Mets when he compiled a 2.43 ERA and .990 WHIP in 35 games, but the ERA climbed to 4.54 in 36 games in 2016 and 5.28 last year. He still struck out a career-best 10.2 per nine innings (33 strikeouts in 29 innings) last season, but his WHIP climbed to 1.345 and he gave up eight home runs.
The signing provides some depth to the Mariners' Triple-A relief crew, with Nick Rumbelow still sidelined by a sore neck and Tony Zych recently released due to lingering arm issues.
Since Goeddel's signing was a Minor League deal, the Mariners' 40-man roster remains at 37 players.
