Greg Johnson to represent Giants with owners

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants announced changes to their upper management structure on Thursday, naming Greg Johnson as their new designated control person after receiving approval from fellow Major League owners.

Johnson, the son of Giants principal owner Charles B. Johnson, is the chairman and CEO of Franklin Templeton Investments and will replace interim control person Rob Dean, who will now serve as the Giants’ vice chairman. Each club has a designated control person who is accountable to Major League Baseball.

President and CEO Larry Baer and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi will report to managing members Johnson and Dean moving forward. Baer previously served as the Giants’ control person, but he was supplanted by Dean after receiving a four-month suspension following a public incident in March with his wife, Pam. Johnson, Dean and Baer will represent the Giants at owners’ meetings.

The Johnson family, which has been part of the Giants’ ownership group since 1993, is the club’s biggest stakeholder and owns nearly 30 percent of the team.
