Dobbins undergoes Tommy John surgery, ending 2026 season

LOS ANGELES -- Right-hander Hunter Dobbins underwent successful surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament and flexor in his right elbow Wednesday with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas, the Cardinals announced prior to Thursday's series finale against the Dodgers.
It was the second time the 27-year-old Dobbins has undergone Tommy John surgery in his career. He had the procedure in 2021 as well, prior to his selection in the eighth round of that summer’s Draft.
“Because they’ve gone in there for the second time, we’re still looking at about a 12-month return,” said manager Oli Marmol.
Dobbins had exited his Aug. 21 start in Philadelphia with right elbow tightness after throwing a 92.5 mph fastball to Trea Turner in the fifth inning. Dobbins said he had felt tightness in his forearm during warmups -- which is not unusual for him -- but that his arm did not loosen up as he pitched.
He went on the 15-day injured list the following day and received a second opinion on the injury on Monday before having the surgery on Wednesday.
“We’ve had a decent idea of where it was headed, but wanted to be absolutely sure,” Marmol said.

The Cardinals had acquired Dobbins from the Red Sox, along with two other prospects, in a December blockbuster deal for first baseman Willson Contreras, who is enjoying a career year in Boston.
Dobbins had gotten off to a strong start in his St. Louis debut, posting a 3.67 ERA in 11 appearances (eight starts), with 52 strikeouts and 24 walks in 54 innings.
The Cardinals, whose 4.24 team ERA ranks 20th in MLB entering play Thursday, will get Andre Pallante back from the IL for Friday’s series opener against the Rockies.
