ARLINGTON -- Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn, who started Sunday against the Rangers at Globe Life Field, left the game after facing two batters in the fourth inning with what the club called “right arm soreness.”

Manager Mark Kotsay said after the Athletics’ 2-1 victory that Ginn had “some form of a stinger in the shoulder area” on his final pitch.

“We weren’t going to risk anything further, so we had to take him out,” Kotsay said. “Orthopedic from [the Rangers’] side came and saw him, he’s got good strength, good range of motion. We’re going to go slow with this, obviously, take 24 hours and then move forward with seeing how he can play catch.”

Ginn had shown promise in three starts since being promoted from the bullpen on April 10, posting a 3.07 ERA over 14 2/3 innings during that span. He lowered his overall ERA to 3.24 with 3 1/3 scoreless innings on Sunday, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out two before his early departure.

In the third inning, Ginn recorded a flyout before hitting Evan Carter on the elbow with a fastball that sailed up and in. Ginn threw two pitches to the next hitter, Jake Burger, with Carter stealing on the second pitch, a ball well below the zone. After that, a brief meeting on the mound with teammates and staff ensued, and Ginn walked to the dugout.
