MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers placed right-hander Jhoulys Chacín on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a strained right oblique and recalled Travis Shaw from Triple-A San Antonio on Friday.

President of baseball operations David Stearns declined to comment at this time about how Shaw would fit into the team’s crowded infield picture. His two primary positions are taken by All-Star third baseman Mike Moustakas and rookie second baseman Keston Hiura, the reigning National League Player of the Week who hit his 10th home run in Wednesday’s win over the Reds. Shaw also plays first base, but left-handed-hitting Eric Thames and right-handed-hitting Jesús Aguilar have played well of late.

Shaw could be used as a lefty bat off the bench against the Cubs, who are scheduled to start left-handers in two of the three games over the weekend, and whose best relievers are all right-handed.

Shaw was demoted to the Minors with a .164/.278/.290 slash line after 212 Major League plate appearances but had caught fire of late for San Antonio, with eight home runs and a 1.439 OPS in his last 15 games.

The Chacin move was expected after he departed Wednesday’s game with a rib cage injury. He allowed at least one run in each of the first three innings at Miller Park before sustaining the injury swinging the bat in the bottom of the third.
